First, I will admit. I was nervous this weekend.
This camp that my boy went to was more than just another night at a friends house, this was a true camping trip! The kind where your shower is either a dip in the lake, or provided by God in a rain storm! He slept in a tent, without an adult in it. And to top it off, it was a rather stormy weekend.
I didn't think he would, but I was afraid he would want to call us to come pick him up, and I didn't want that. I wanted him to realize how much fun this stuff is! How he can have fun without me or his mom around.
And man did he!
When we first got there, he saw me get out of the car and came a running! When he finally saw his mom, he ran to her too. He talked to us a few moments, and then was quickly out pacing us with his friends headed to dinner.
The leaders told me what a great job he did, and only had one slight breakdown and that was Sunday morning (after a very tiring week). So, that was awesome! He was so tired come Sunday, after lunch, he fell asleep at the lunch table!
Watching him interact with his friends, allowed me to see how much he grew up this weekend! To listen to him talk about the paddling the war canoes, and swimming, and the castle, and songs, and skits they did, was incredible. We sang one of the songs several times in the car on the way to my parents for church camp this week. I learned more about the 3 days at Resident camp than I think I found out the entire school year about what when on at school.
And as happy and proud of him as I was, it also makes me sad knowing how much my little boy is growing up. But again, that is is how it should be.
This week, he is at church camp with my parents. He'll be exhausted by the time he gets home. But he's having a good summer!

Cub Scouts
This past weekend, we had a cub scout campout. It was a lot of fun. The weather was just about perfect! My boy and I got there and got camp set up, had lunch and then managed to go on a hike on part of the Trail of Tears.
My wife made it too! This was the first cub scout campout that she has got to come to. My boy was so happy that she got to come. When he saw her, his face just lit up!
My boy is such a daddy's boy, but he loves his momma, and loves spending time with her.
So any mom's that might be reading this, I want you to know that no matter how big of a daddy's boy your son may be, they still want and need you to be a big part of their lives.

Cub World Camping Trip
Over the weekend, we had our camping trip to Cub World at Zinc Ranch. It was a lot of fun.
This year, we camped near a castle they have built there, so they had the boys make swords, shields and swords. My wife and I made his sword and shield. It was really cool and he likes them very much. Then Friday, I made his helmet. It wasn't as cool as I would like, but its not bad. It even has padding in the helmet. He was happy with the set, so we were ready for our camping trip.
So, we went Saturday morning and had a great time. The grass was WAY high, but the castle rocked!!! The kids had a great time storming the castle and fighting for ground. It was an awesome time. Saturday, my boy got hurt though. He was at the castle playing and basically ran into a pole. I'm not sure if it was inside or out, but he gave himself a little shiner.

Derby Update
We are back from the races. We had a good time. There were over 50 cars there!
The Pack got a new track this year to go with the new electronic timer we got last year. With the software they got and the timers, the races went fast! Each of the boys got 4 runs. It was great!
My boy didn't place in the Wolf division. But he enjoyed it. He came in 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, and 4th.
All the scouts got to vote on their favorite car in each age group. My boy did the

Pine Wood Derby!
Yes, it's that time again, time for the Cub Scouts Pine Wood Derby.
We had a lot of fun making his car this year. And I think it looks much better than last years model.
He didn't really want to do it, or so he said. Truth is, he's excited about it. Especially now it is done, but he didn't want to take the time from playing video game to work on it. Silly boy.
The big race is tomorrow, lets hope we do better than last years last place finish.

Space Derby
It's was again time for the Cub Scout Space Derby.
We were a bit slow getting my boys space craft ready for the race tonight, but we got it finished. The design is much different than last years.
Last night was the big race. I ended up helping out with the race, which was a lot of fun. We ran the Tigers first. Then the Wolves! When they hung my boys rocket, he was as excited as could be. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO!!!!!!
He came in last. He was the very picture of crestfallen. It broke my heart. We took a walk out into the hall so we could talk in private, and he could shed the tears that were already forming in his eyes.
He was so upset that he came in last (last year he came in third for his division). I explained to him how proud I was of him for designing his rocket, and doing the majority of the work himself. I also explained to him that there was nothing wrong with coming in last. The talk seemed to help, but then he said, with tears welling up in his eyes again, but I wont get a stand to hang it on. I told him they had some stands for sell, and we'll see about getting him one, which we did.
He and my wife came home early to finish up on homework while I stayed to finish the race. When I got home I asked him if he had fun, and I got a resounding YES!
Like I said, I was very proud of the work he did on his rocket. It was the mostunusual unique design I saw all night.

USS Batfish
Saturday, the Cub Scouts went the USS Batfish Volunteer day. To help clean and get the Batfish ready for a reunion of the crew that had served on the Batfish during WWII.
The Batfish was a WWII Diesel Submarine. We were lucky enough to get a tour of it from one of the men that had served on the Batfish. The cub scouts really had a good time. We got there late because of a soccer game (which was pretty good), but we made it for lunch and the tours. And afterward, most people were headed home, but I made sure we got some work so my boy could work.
This was not only a Batfish memorial, but also a war memorial as they had other items there.
If you have never been, I'd urge you to go. I went once as a kid/teenager (don't remember how old I was), and this was my second time there.

Raingutter Regatta
Tonight was my son's Raingutter Regatta at the Pack meeting.
Instead of doing the normal boat, we got creative and made a catamaran. My boy helped design it, sand it, and paint it. Though I did the cutting on the boat.
So, at tonights race, well, let's just say he kicked some booty. :)
He ended up in 1st place of the Tiger Cubs!!!
He was so happy.

He was racing another Catamaran. I thought he was going to get beat. And I would have been upset since I told his den master what

Hello?
Man, where have I been? Not blogging, that is for certain, huh?
Last Saturday was a busy day.
That morning, I was at the soccer fields helping get them ready for this years games. We were doing the initial marking of the fields, fixing bleachers, fixing nets, filling holes. I was there from 8 till 12:30, and I was one tired puppy when I came home.
That evening we had a Cub Scout banquet where my boy was suppose to get his Tiger badge, but because of a communication problem, they didn't get their awards. The promotion ceremony for the 2nd year Webelos into Boy Scouts was really cool.
Because of that, we missed the eclipse, but we did catch a really cool moon.

Work has been crazy, and I mean real crazy. So bad, I haven't wanted to go, but I have.
Hopefully, it wont be another week and a half till my next update.

Go!
Today was the big race! You could feel the excitement in the air!
With the Tigers racing first, we were very excited. My boy ended up in the second heat. First up though was one of the other boys in our Den. He did very well ending up first in his heat.
The second Tiger heat was on, and he did ok. He took 3rd, 5th, and 5th. He was disappointed, but I was very proud of him. He ended up getting a participation trophy which is is very proud of, and he also got a display case for his car (which he is also proud of).
In a couple months is the Rain Gutter Regatta. We'll see how he does there.

Get Set...
Tonight, we went and weighed in the car.
We got there right at 6 so we could weigh it in and have time to tweak it if necessary.
I ended up helping unload the track and getting it set up. Once that was set up, we checked in the car. Luckily, we only had to add a couple of BB's to make it hit the 5oz mark (and we didn't have to remove any... yea!)
We'll see how the race goes tomorrow.

On your mark...
This weekend is the big Pine Wood Derby Race!!! Both my boy and I are excited.
Tomorrow night we go check in the car. He is only 7, so I used most of the tools in making this car. He did help though. It was his car, so what we did was up to him. I told him, if he didn't pick something, he'd race a rectangle down the track. So he helped with design, painting, color choices, numbering and some sanding. Assuming he is in Cub Scouts next year, he'll hopefully get to do more himself.
The race is Saturday.

Space Derby
About a wee ago, after I got off work. My boy and I started working on this rocket for the Space Derby next week.
He designed what he wanted. He helped some on the body, but had problems using the tools. And he painted it himself. (can you tell?)
He is very proud of his rocket.

Well, Tuesday was the race and he did very well. He came in second place in his race. They took the first and second place winners of each race (for each age group) and raced again. So, in his second race, he came in third place. I was way impressed. He got a little trophy that holds his racer and it has a little plaque on it saying he came in 3rd place in the Space Derby.

Veterans Day
Friday, at my son's school, they had a Veterans Day assembly. They asked all the Cub Scouts and Brownies that wanted to take part in the event to come in their uniform. When I told my boy of the invitation, he was excited!
Friday, he proudly wore his uniform to school. My wife and father-in-law got to go watch. My wife tole me I would have been very proud of him and that he did a great job.
My boy was part of the Color Guard when they Posted the Colors and when they Retrieved the Colors, he got to carry the American Flag.
My wife did tell me of one cute thing that happened. As he was carrying the flag back, he was concentrating on holding the heavy flag up and making sure it didn't touch the ground that he wasn't looking up. Well, in the gym where they had the ceremony, there were basketball goals with nets on them. And the eagle on his flag got caught up in the net. Thankfully, there was someone there to help him get untangled.
I wish I could have been there to see it.

We had several good pictures from the event, but since they had other kids in the pictures, I didn't want to post them. Here was a picture of him as he walked in front of my wife. Can you see the concentration on his face?

Cub Scout Popcorn Sales
Tonight I went and picked up the popcorn my boy sold so we can start delivering.
As I've stated before, he sold over $730 worth of popcorn. That is a lot of popcorn. But you should have seen what I saw tonight.
The pack sold over $18,000 worth of popcorn. That is right. I didn't put the comma in the wrong spot. over $18,000. That means that the if we sell all the popcorn that was ordered (order first, pay when you get it), then the pack will receive around $6,300 plus the fact that this region will also get $6,300.
I still don't know if my boy is one of the top 3 sellers, but the top seller sold over $2,500 himself. That's darn impressive (and from what I could tell, he did it, not his parents).

Cub Scout Awards
Last night at my son's Pack meeting, he and his den were the color guard for the flags. They did such a good job. They followed the Webelos down and followed their lead. It was cute.
From the quick survey last night, it also looks like he was one of the top 4 popcorn sellers. The top 3 sellers get gift cards from Academy. The top seller gets $50, 2nd gets $30 and 3rd gets $20.
Of those there last night, he and another boy set down when they went from the 700 to 800 mark. So, I'm not sure if he'll get that extra bonus or not. We'll have to wait and see.
He got 2 awards last night. They are belt loops (that go on the belt). He got one for fishing and archery. He was very proud going up and getting his award.
He also got his Space Derby Kit last night.
What is Space Derby? Imagine Pine wood derby, but the "cars" hang from fishing line and have propellers. That Derby is next month, right after Thanksgiving.

Get your popcorn here!
After our soccer game this morning, which went very good, we came home, changed cloths and went out to sell popcorn for Cub Scouts.
My boy has had his eyes on some 2 way radios as one of the prizes for some time. It took $700 worth of popcorn sales to get that prize. When he set that as his goal I told him he would have to sell it. I'd take him, but he'd sale it, and I wouldn't make him go sell. If he didn't want to he wouldn't have to.
I had already taken it to my work, and my wife to hers. All said, there was probably $200 already sold before he started.
Well, the popcorn sales are due Tuesday. And as of this morning he still needed $240 to reach his $700 goal. So, we went to his baby-sitters neighborhood, and started knocking on doors. (OK, he knocked, I mostly stood at on the sidewalk making sure he was safe and answer any questions he couldn't.)
After about 2 hours of knocking on doors, he only needed $13 to reach his $700 goal. I really couldn't believe it. That is a stinking lot of popcorn. Once we reached that point, I knew he had it. My grandparents hadn't bought any yet, and neither had we.
I was impressed. He sold over $500 worth all by his onesies.
I think what impressed me more was he set a goal, and accomplished it.
By selling $100 worth, he'll get a Pack T-shirt that we are designing.
By selling $500 worth, he'll get to go to the week long Cub Scout Day camp next year for free (our pack pays the dues if they sell that much)
By selling $700 worth, he'll get his 2 way radios (walkie-talkies).
He filled up 2 complete order forms.
Guess the only thing I can say is...
WOW!

Cub Scouts - Woolaroc
Thursday, the Cub Scouts went to Woolaroc. which means Woods, lakes, rocks. For those who don't know, it was created by Frank Phillips the founder of Phillips 66. So I took off work so I could take my boy. It was the first time he had been there, and the first time he had been to a museum. (I know, I've been a bad dad.) Anyway he loved it! Just the drive in was an adventure as we saw so many animals that he had never seen before.
They have a watch tower, or whatever you want to call it on top of one of the buildings. From it you can see all around. That is were I took the above picture looking at the front of the Museum.
After we watched a movie and slide show, we went into the museum and looked around. He loved it. He enjoyed a lot of stuff in there. He liked the guns and shrunken-heads, arrow heads and a lot of the other stuff that was in there.
After that, we went back across to the other building and had lunch. The Cub Scout Pack supplied bottomless PB&J sandwiches. When we finished, we fed our trash to the Trash eating Buffalo (a vacuum buffalo that sucks up your trash). This has always been one of the coolest things to me and my wife about Woolaroc, and he loved it too. Then off to a hike we went.
It wasn't a long hike, but considering the temps were low, it wasn't bad. There is a bit more to the trail that we my take later that we as a pack did not go on. But for Thursday, it was good.
After the hick we were done. Me and my boy stayed a while longer and went and looked at the old lodge, and he got to climb around on some rocks down by the lodge. On the way out, we saw many more animals really up close and personal. We drove through a huge heard of buffalo as well. They were very close. One was about 3 feet from the car. Me and my boy had a blast as did the other Cub Scouts.

Cub Scout Campout
This weekend was the Cub Scout camp out at Osage Hills State Park.
It was a blast.
We came home from our soccer game (which was ok) and we finished loading up the car and got on the road by 10:40. I had wanted to leave by 10:30, but that's not bad.
We got there and found a spot to set up our tent. We unloaded and set-up. After I finally found a place to park the car, we sat down for a sack lunch we packed. About the time we finished, most everyone was getting ready to go fishing, so I got our stuff ready. We ended up not going with everyone else and stayed behind to do some leather working. Both me and my boy made some cute pieces. His had a skull and crossbones at the top with a snake at the bottom. Between them was a shortened version of his name. Along the left was OHSP and 2006 on the right. We tied it around his walking stick, he was very proud. I had the Tiger Cub symbol and a fish. with 2006 and OHSP along the sides. I also beveled my edges a bit. I hung mine from the wrist strap on my walking stick.
Afterwards, we hiked to the fishing hole (lake) to do some fishing and take a look at the old CCC camp site. I was glad I paid attention a month ago when I went with my dad as I was able to tell the couple kids and parents with us the same stuff he told me. We fished for a bit, but didn't catch anything.
On the hike back, we saw some turkeys, armadillo, a hawk and some deer. We found some really good turkey feathers that we also put on our walking sticks. The kids were most impressed with those, as were the kids at camp.
We had dinner, burgers and hot dogs, and it was good. After dinner, we went to the water falls. But with the lack of rain, it wasn't a water fall, but it was very pretty.

Later, they had smores and boy scout cobblers made in the dutch overs. They had apple and cherry. They were GREAT! The kids continued to have a good time, but I heard several talk about being tired (as was I) around 8:30. My boy and I finally got to the shower and back to camp, played several games of UNO and then finally went to sleep around 10 to 10:30. I got up early this morning to help cook breakfast and left my boy to sleep but he finally got up and around before breakfast. I was amazed at how early some of the kids got up. We had biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and pancakes. (again, it was good).
Since by the time I helped clean up and get our tent down and put up, we had missed church. So my boy and I went on another hike and then finally to my parents to drop off the camping stuff we borrowed.

The trip overall was a blast. My only complaint (and the only complaint I heard from everyone else) was the parking situation. Part of that was the fact we did not camp in an actual camp site, but with 75 people (2 - 4 per vehicle) that left us with a lot of cars, and no place for them. Other than that, everyone had a great time!
I know my boy did as he slept most the way home and is still sleeping.
It was a blast.
We came home from our soccer game (which was ok) and we finished loading up the car and got on the road by 10:40. I had wanted to leave by 10:30, but that's not bad.
