SENIOR! I'm both excited and sad about this. Last year was a rough year. Lots of stuff going in and around our house. This year, things look to be starting much smoother. His schedule was messed up going into today, so after band this morning, he's going to be getting that straightened out. I'm excited for him!

Junior?!?! What? How did that happen? When did that happen? I'm still in shock. Junior Prom, SAT tests and the like. Possibly even college applications. Um, wow! He sure is fun though. Praying his year is AWESOME!

The hardest part of this year is not taking him to school on his first day.

Her present this year is she gets to take her son to his first day of Kindergarten!

She's never been easy. But I love her! I always will!

(Though I wouldn't mind if she made things a bit easier for us! hehe)

So, here are a few updates.

Around January 7th, our olive eggers finally started laying. Well, at least 2 have. About half of our eggs are now the olive eggs. It's really cool to look into the egg carton, and see the multi-colored eggs.

January 9th, we had our first snow of the year. We didn't get a lot, and it was real pretty while it lasted, which wasn't long.

On January 15th, my Boy turned 16!!! Hard to believe! He got his permit towards the end of December, so we've been driving. He's not super thrilled about it., I keep wondering who's kid he really is! (Too bad he looks like me) Birthday person gets to pick the restaurant. And where did my boy pick? Charlies Chicken cause he wanted some Corn dodgers! He had 2 friends come over after school, and they hung out and played Magic until time to open presents and go get some food.

Over the weekend, I did some work on the chicken coop. We've had our chicken feeder hanging under the chicken coop. And it works pretty well. But when it's extremly muddy, wet, well, yucky, it's a real pain to get in there, and get it. I saw some cool chicken feeders built with PVC pipe recently. So we decided to make one. We'll see how well it works.

I have a 4" pipe that runs from inside the coop, right next to where we keep a 5 gallon bucket with food, down under the coop. There we made a little stopper and cover so hopefully, we'll not have any problems with it falling out, or with a lot of rain getting in it.

We'll see, and I'll update later on how it's going. (and you can't tell in this picture, but no, it is not sitting on the ground)

Guess that's it really. I've had one Boy Scout camp out over the weekend. Saturday night, it got down to 11 degrees and it snowed a bit on both Saturday and Sunday, but overall, everyone had a great time.

Until next time!
After looking at how many eggs we had our first year compared to now, I really miss the ISA Brown chickens. You'll see from the numbers that they just beat the Barred Rock chickens. I have 3 Olive Eggers that have yet to start laying, so I can't wait for them to start. Hopefully, Egg production will increase soon.

So, in 8.5 months, we had more eggs than we did in the last 12 months.

Pricewise, things are well. Each egg is costing me 23.9 cents and egg at the moment. That cost does not include my coop. Including the cost of our coop, it's 50.3 cents per egg.

That's $2.87/dozen without the coop, and $6.03/dozen with the coop included.

Overall, I'm pretty happy. We've not lost any birds to predation, which is great! We lost one bird to being sick, and 3 when they stopped laying, and we turned them into bone broth. That's been some great broth!

When my wife and I were dating, she wanted to know if I'd be willing to adopt her daughter after we were married. She didn't just want a step-father for her daughter, she wanted a father.

That was not an issue in the slightest!

At our wedding, after being announced as man and wife, I turned to that little red haired girl and asked her if she'd be my little girl! She nodded, and I gave her a ring to seal the deal.

14 months after we were married, the 3 of us stood in front of a judge, and that red haired girl became mine! I've always teased her that her brother is my first born, but she's my oldest!

I've told her more than once, that her brother I got by the roll of the dice, but that I chose her to be my daughter. And I've never regretted that choice!

It's not been easy being her dad. But in all honesty, I'd not trade it for a thing!
I'm glad I was there for her. In all the ups and downs, arguments and hugs, good days and bad.

While taking pictures I'm thinking about Easter and what it means.

An eclipse is an interesting thing. The Earth is moving between the sun and the moon. Its cutting off all light the sun provides.

How often do we as Christians let things come between us and the light Christ offers? It might be work, or family, or even church work itself.

Now, while this is going on, how many people will pay no attention that the light is getting dimmer, that it’s being blocked by something. Do the notice? Do they care?

Also, how often do we as Christians allow our actions, behaviors, language, clothing, etc. block the light we're supposed to shine on others? We're supposed to reflect Christ's light aren't we?

A third aspect that I see while looking at the eclipse is that while it’s going on. Few people stop to notice. This morning, most people were either sleeping or driving to whatever beckons them. But Spiritually, how many people notice when the light dims? We should stop everything and address the issue right then, not wait. Like this eclipse. There will come a time, the light’s gone and we’ll wonder how we got here, and unlike this eclipse, it may not be a simple matter to get that light back.

So, how's the light you're receiving?

How's the light you're reflecting?

I was considering getting something form the local farm store, and my wife suggested I use my aquarium light. Not a bad idea, if I can figure a way to do it. Well, after working in the garden some, I took a break and decided to work on making a seedling light source. So, I'm looking through the garage and see the pallet boards and a plan was born. Last year, my wife gathered a TON of pallets, and after untold hours of breaking them apart, we have a lot of pallet wood. It is really nice to have it around.

It still needs a bit more work because I'm trying to make it adjustable, but the screws I had weren't long enough to go through 2 pallet boards.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with myself! I'll put the light on a timer and I'll see how it goes.
This morning though, while I was making breakfast for the family, I was looking out our big picture window and watching the birds flying in and out of our lilac bush with the leaf buds just coming out.

I walked around yesterday and took a look at all the trees we planted over the last few years. You never know how they'll take the winters (or the summers for that matter) when they are that young. It looks like they all survived the winter! The Redbud tree is even putting on some red buds.
I know it's just March 15th and Spring doesn't officially get here for another week or so, but it definitely looks like Spring is springing around here!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13551581750321722823noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12193735.post-81110702145083395252015-02-23T23:10:00.001-06:002015-02-23T23:10:40.233-06:00Suck it up cupcake! This is my second post where I'm not talking about chickens, photography or gardening, but this really bothered me today.

Men, do you want what's best for your child?

I hope you all would just say yes, but I want you to think about this a moment. Do you REALLY want what's best for your child?

I've always thought that most people would always answer yes to that question, but I've come to believe that many men don't. They want what's best for themselves!

I know a lot of youth and interact with a lot of youth and when dealing with youth, you deal with parents, step parents, grand parents, guardians, etc. I'm shocked at how one parent can act towards another parent, with no regard for their child!

Last minute cancel of plans, never mind people were counting on them to show up, ESPECIALLY their child. Not swapping a weekends even though the CHILD (not ex) has something special planned that they've worked really hard and long for, but the "parent" is too childish to either swap the weekend, or keep your weekend, but taking them to their event. I bet your child would LOVE that!

I do get there are circumstances where a parent had something planned with their kid and the child had something planned with some school or extra-curricular event that falls on the same weekend. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about knowing your child wants to do something that they've worked a long time on, and you decide no, because your ex really wants him to go. Too many times I've seen where one doesn't bend at all to "show" them. Never caring if their child is hurt in the process.

Better yet, I've seen where a woman finally marries a good man. He has a job, works hard to supply the needs for his family. Treats the kids well. Why on earth would you not want a good man to treat your child well? Many times, they have no desire to replace you, but you act as though your child can only love you or them. NEWS FLASH for you, a child's love is boundless! There is room for multiple people in your child's life. I would love for as many good role models as I can get to come into my son's life, even if me and his mother were not together.

Yes, I do realize that maybe that woman hasn't picked a winner. Maybe they are about as bad as you can get. Guess what? There's not a lot you can do about it. So, you have a choice. You can suck it up and do what's best for your child. Letting them be involved in things they like, helping them as much as you can which might mean you have some contact with the other parent, OR you can act like a jerk all the time.
If a child can't have their parents together, having them get along is the next best thing.

One day, your child will be old enough to notice everything, and they will. Maybe they'll see what kind of person their mom is with or maybe, they'll just see the hurt that you've caused them. Oh, I'm sure they'll still love you, but will your relationship be the same if you were always there to support them and loving them and never used them as a pawn?

Grow up already people. Do what's best for your child! A child needs peace in their lives, so is YOUR bickering and pettiness really bringing peace? (The answer to that is no, just in case you weren't sure).

I've seen this time and time and time again.

DISCLAIMER 1: Yes, I addressed this to men, but the same holds true for women. So if you're a woman who was strongly agreeing with what I posted, go back through and change the genders of what I'm saying. If you no longer agree, then maybe I'm talking about you too.

DISCLAIMER 2: This is just a blog post, these are my opinions. No, I don't know your situation. No, I don't know what they are like, but I know the dozens of people I'm thinking about, and it DOES fit them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13551581750321722823noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12193735.post-9953474496965754472015-02-19T21:13:00.000-06:002015-02-19T21:13:10.093-06:00Men, WAKE UP!So, I was listening to the Familyman podcast earlier today. And he talked about Nehemiah 4:14.

After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."

That got me to thinking.

How many of us men out there, aren't afraid?

How many of us men remember the Lord who is great and awesome?

How many of us men remember that we need to fight for our families?

How many of us men remember that we need to for our sons?

How many of us men remember that we need to for our daughters?

How many of us men remember that we need to for our wives?

How many of us men remember that we need to for our homes?

Men, WAKE UP!
It only takes a moment for one or more of those things to be gone.

All of these things are under attack!

Our sons and daughters are bombarded by drugs, alcohol, sex, and any number of things. They fight with acceptance, depression, and again more things that I can list here. And then you can add the battles their friends go through that effect our children's lives. Do you know what can happen to your kids when bad things happen to their friends? I do, oh how I do.

Being a dad is tough. Too strict or too lenient, and you're asking for a world of hurt. If you hit either extreme, I can just about guarantee you'll have some sort of major problems with your son or daughter.

We have to love our kids. They're not perfect. How can they be, they're our kids!? We need to make sure we show our kids the same love and forgiveness that God shows us on a daily basis!

One thing our kids need more than anything is a peaceful house. No one wants to be in a house with lots of yelling or the cold shoulder going on, and you have to walk around on egg shells.

And one of the greatest gifts you can give you kids is to love your wife! Cherish her. I've heard it said that kids can forgive a multitude of sins, if you love their mother.

Our wives, too, have more on their plate than we really know. It doesn't matter if they are a stay at home mom, a woman with a full time job (or more), or somewhere in between. When's the last time you sat down and had a talk with your wife? Have you dated her lately? Don't use the excuse of no money. You can date on a walk through the neighborhood or park. Even a foot or back rub at home after the kids are in bed. Does she know you've got her back? Do you have her back?

Do you know what your wife goes through when your kids have issues? If you're like me, you might be able to turn off part of your brain and keep truckin' on. More than likely, your wife can't.

What's in her past that might still be spinning in her head that effects her present. If it effects her, it then effects you! What are you willing to do to help?

Are you doing what you need to protect yourself from temptations that bombard you on a daily basis? Your home will be destroyed if you're not careful with what you let into your own life and heart.

Are you keeping your heart pure? Don't say you don't struggle with it, nearly every man does. Our society is doing everything it can to cause that struggle. Movies, TV shows, books, commercials, games, co-workers, friends. The list goes on and on!

How about work? You wife and your kids need you! They need you more than they need your money. Now it's important for us to take care of our families. We have to work to pay for things, but we have to make sure we don't spend all of our time at work. We need to spend time with our kids. We need to spend time with our wives. They need us. The need us more than you may realize. Maybe even more than they realized.

Now, I know I've mainly spoke to married men with children. That's because, that's who I am. I've never been divorced, but I know some that have. So if that's you. You can still listen to my advice on your children. And if you're married again, love her. While it's not the same as their mom, it will mean something. And for their mother. Be nice! Remember in school, the fastest way to make someone mad was talking about their mother. So don't. Once upon a time, there was something in that woman you loved, or at least liked.

"Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."

I made the discovery that I had posted 999 blog posts.
Wow!

That's crazy! Of course, by international blogging rules, I'm required to to make my 1000th post about it being my 1000th post.

However, there are no guidelines about said post. So, I decided to have a few links back to a few of my posts.

Because of the scarcity of my posts lately, I'll not pick any posts from 2015. They're new enough, you can probably just scroll down and see them all.

So, without further ado... here they are (in no particular order)

While shopping, I found a cool sign that I thought she would love. I decided to get it, but when it got to the shipping, it was nearly as much as the present. Well, I just couldn't do that. So, I kept looking, but I kept going back to the sign, but there was no way I was going to pay that much money. So, I decided I'd just make it myself.

Here's what I did.

First, I took 2 boards of pallet wood that I had broken apart last year.

(These are 2 stand in's, I didn't think to take pictures till it was too late.)

After cutting them to 2 boards 12" long from each board, I think found a slat from some shutters my wife had used for a project a year or so ago. Then I took the staple gun, and attached everything together.

I had been considering leaving the natural wood look to this, but after thinking about it, I decided to go ahead an paint it. The inspiration piece was painted black, but I wasn't sure I wanted to go that way. So, I looked around at some of the paints we had, and I liked the way this green looked.

I purposely did not paint it with a paint brush because I wanted some of the old wood to show through. I was wanting a rustic looking piece when I was done. I actually used a paper towel.

I then decided it needed something more. So, back to the left over paint to see what magic I might create. I found this whitish colored paint, and decided to add some to it.

Again, I used a paper towel, and I wanted to just add another layer, not completely covering everything I already had done.

So, while that dried, the hard part began. I needed to put the words on this piece. But how to do it. My penmanship sucks, and I'm sure it would be worse at the scale these letters were going to be.

A year or 2 ago, my wife made a really cool project where she painted some words onto a fence. So I decided to follow her lead. I printed everything off, and made sure the fonts and size I was going to use were correct. After a little experimenting, and some reprints, I had everything I needed. Now, I just needed to cut out the letters.

Before I even got around to that, I decided that "Ain't nobody got time for that!" So, I made a trip to Hobby Lobby to see about buying some stencils. I bought 3 sets, some black paint, paint brushes and some hardware for hanging.

I came home from work and started using a pencil to stencil the outlines of the words onto the boards.

It took me a couple hours that day, and 2 lunch periods at work, but I finally got the words stenciled. Once that was done, it was time to color between the lines (aka fill in the letters). Thursday when lunch ended, I had them filled in.

While working on this at work, I had commented to one of my coworkers that I had considered having some chicken tracks go across it (under the lettering) in some red paint. Well, she thought it was a great idea.

I still wasn't sold. But the more I thought about it, I really thought it would be a nice touch. So Thursday night, on the way home from work, I stopped at Hobby Lobby again. This time, for some red paint.

That evening, I worked on finding just the right chicken feet to use as templates. I never found a great one. I found one that wasn't bad, but after printing it, and cutting it out, it didn't work too well. I had considered having one of my chickens walk across it after I put her feet in red paint, but decided against that.

So, with pencil in hand, I started sketching in some chicken tracks. Up to this point, I could still back out with the red paint plans. I could get an eraser, and go to down. But with the way I painted the background, the only way to "fix" any mistakes this red paint might be would be to start over.

I locked myself into our bedroom with the red paint and a brush. I took a deep breath, and put brush to board. I loved it. I put 2 coats of red paint on it Thursday night. Then it was time to go to bed.

Friday at work, I put 2 more coats of red paint on the feet, and when it was done, I was impressed. It looked exactly like I wanted. Not exactly like my inspiration piece, but really good. Better even, (in my biased opinion)

Friday night, I wrapped the present, and Saturday morning, after breakfast, we exchanged presents, and she opened it.

Not as rural as I would like, but to have as fast of internet speed that I do have, I can't live much further out than this.

We live on a 1.1 acre lot. It's not huge, well, until it's time to mow, but it's much better than many, many, many city lots.

Over the last few years, I'd been suggesting to my wife that we get some chickens. Well, last year, my wife decided it sounded like a good idea. So my son and I built a coop, and my wife found us some chickens.

We got 10 chickens on 4/22/2014, we split them with some friends, so we've had 5 chickens until a month or so ago, when we ended up picking up another chicken from a friend who was ready to get out of chickens.

Since that day, we've received 1,015 eggs!!!
I know that number because I've kept records. I know how much money we've spent on food. I know how much money we spent on the coop, I know it all.

Today, on this relatively warm January Oklahoma day, we confined the dog to the house (he loves the chickens a little to much) and let them roam around the back yard. We try to let them do that on a daily basis, but it doesn't always happen. It would happen a lot more if the dog wouldn't chase them all over the yard.

While they were out, I took a few pictures. They love having free range of the back yard. And the happier they are, the more eggs we get.

We started off with my wife's birthday. I got her a 2013 Nexus 7, then that evening, I cooked steak!

My wife and I took a road trip to Bentonville AR just to eat at a restaurant we'd not heard of before that day, then we did a bit of shopping before taking back roads home. We ate at The Flying Fish, and it was great!
Last weekend, I got to go camping with the Boy Scouts. We went up to Kansas and had a really good time. The meals we adults ate were all cooked over the campfire.

And today, I got my Fitbit HR that I've been wanting.

So, like I said a good year so far.

I've been thinking about the year to come. There's so much I want to do. So many things I want to work on. Many things I want to learn. I'd love to blog more as well. Blogging is easier when you have one topic you like to talk about. But that's not me, I have many topics I want to talk about. Backpacking and Camping, Gardening, Fishing, Chickens, and many other things.

So, while the year is going well, I'm not sure I know what it holds.

Guess I'll have to hang on and see.

Until next time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13551581750321722823noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12193735.post-51642670596963579722014-10-19T16:01:00.000-05:002015-02-14T20:52:53.791-06:00Handy Camping Trick

We camp a lot, and over the years, we had problems where the soap from the scrub brush would leak out on everything in the camping box. So several years ago, I came up with a solution, and thought I'd share.

First, I took a 32 ounce cup from my favorite convenience store, and then cut a hole in the lid big enough for the handle to go through.

Then we could slide the handle through the lid, and close the lid onto the cup. Then, when it's put into the camping gear box, soap rarely leaks out now, and when it does, it's contained in the cup.

We've had to replace the cup ever so years as the plastic of the lid becomes brittle, but considering I'm taking something I already have on hand, and turn the trash into something useful, I think it can't really be beat!
Yesterday, I'd blogged about adding some more shade to the chicken yard. So I made sure I went out to see how things looked this morning.

With the additions I made, there is a lot more shade available to them. They should be able to use the new shaded area's until about noon. At that point, they'll have to go back to under the coop.

New:
When we built the coop, ventilation was a real big deal to me. We built a wooden coop, but it has a corrugated steel roof and I've been concerned about the heat inside the coop. I realize during the day, they aren't in there much, but depending on how much it heats up, it might take a while to cool off at night.

So, while at the store today, I decided to get one of the wireless transmitted temperature gauges. I have the other end sitting on the back porch. This will allow me to see the temperature differences between outside and inside the coop.

Today, it got to 94 here in Northeaster Oklahoma. Right now at 6:00, it's 93 degrees on the back porch, and it's 95 in the coop.

While I was doing that, we ended up having a cage match with at least 2 of the chickens. Both ended up bloody with a little blood on them. One had some blood around her beak and the other had some on her breast. Afterward though, everything was fine. I guess they were working on the pecking order over something.

But afterward, one of them acted a little strange, so I sat down and watched them all for a while. Except for the fact she was walking the fence back and forth looking for a way out, she seemed fine.

I then noticed that one of the birds had some runny poo. I didn't however see which bird did it. So, I watched even more.

I opened the coop and took a look in there, and noticed under the roost, there was one place that had runny poop. So, I took a closer look at it looking for anything abnormal (other than it being runny that is).

So, being a computer guy, I did what I always do in situations like this. I did some analysis, and then came inside and did some research. That's when I found a forum post with lots of pictures of chicken poop to look and compare. After looking at the pictures, it was ceacal. And that most things I read from a myriad of sites pretty much said it wasn't anything to be too worried about. So I went back out and watch them to make sure everyone was really fine.

After watching another 30 minutes or so, everyone seemed fine. No one was really acting strange so sickly. I did however, decide to do some stuff outside so I could keep an eye on everyone.

I took a look at the chicken yard, and decided it could use some cleaning, so I went and got my garden rake and my flat shovel. I also noticed that they've eaten almost all the grass in there. Since we still had netting left over from covering the chicken yard, I decided to throw together an extended chicken run. However, none of the girls really wanted to leave the shaded area under the coop. So I grabbed an old broken patio umbrella, and set it up in the extended run. They still weren't going for it. They almost looked afraid of it. Oh well, maybe they'll eventually go out there. In the meantime, I cleaned up the yard.

Next up was to work on some shade for the girls The next 3 days, the temperatures are supposed to be in the lower 90's! Ugh, I'm not ready for that. A couple weeks ago, we knew we needed some shade so we took an old roll up shade we had which had broken, and tied it to the netting above the chicken yard in front of the coop. It sorta reminded me of a front porch. Then we had some really strong winds, and well, this happened.

After that, the only shade currently in our chicken yard is the shade under the coop. And during the late morning that's not much.

I'd considered putting the patio umbrella in there, but with they way they were acting toward it, I decided not to.
My wife suggested I cut it up and attach it to the top to give them other shaded spots during the day. So I did that, then I took it one step further.

I attached one small section to the top of the yard (over the netting) The other I placed on the east side. As the sun comes up, it should give a good shaded spot for a good portion of the morning, especially with the small piece on top.

Guess we'll see how it really goes tomorrow.

I got to thinking though that some of the strange behavior of the one chicken that was pacing the fence might have been to get to more of the shaded are she could see. I could be wrong, but it's a start.

After doing all that, I still wanted to be around the birds just to make sure everything is good, so I worked on tearing down some pallets my wife brought home for free. If I ever get them done, I'm looking to build a fence around my garden with them.

By this point in the day, I was exhausted. I cleaned up, and then we locked up our dog and let the chickens free range for the last 2-3 hours of daylight.
Once they were all in bed, it was time to come inside and cook up some of that bacon for some BLT's! I should have baked a loaf of bread to go with the fresh lettuce, tomatoes and bacon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13551581750321722823noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12193735.post-89700423586314049192014-05-02T23:24:00.001-05:002015-02-14T22:29:21.196-06:00Strawberries!Thursday, when I got home from work, I went out to check on the girls and check for eggs. Then I walked through all my raised beds checking for weeds. It really is amazing how much time you can save yourself by pulling a few weeds every day or two instead of waiting a long time before doing it!

As I was making the rounds, I stopped and really looked at my strawberries. There are so many blooms and lots of green berries forming!

I love strawberries. But I'm not a fan of those huge berries you get at the store. I like the small berries, though that may be because that's what I always had growing up.

I'm hoping come next year, the bed I have will be full of berries!

Grow berries, grow!
So far, so good. We've not had any problems to speak of yet (not that I would expect in just 15 days, but you never know). The only predator problem we've had was that first day when I was working on the gate to the chicken yard, and our Boston Terrier got into the yard. Luckily, the girls can run fast, and I was able to catch him fast!

One of the main reasons we wanted to get chickens were for their eggs. I mean, who doesn't want a fresher, tastier, healthier egg?

The first day we brought our girls home, we had an egg!

And we had fresh eggs every day since! We've had between 1 and 5 eggs every day. It wasn't long before we had a bowl full of eggs!

Last Wednesday, I started a log to keep track of our egg production. Since that time, we've had 25 eggs in 8 days. So, we've averaged a little over 3 eggs a day! One of those was a double yoked egg!

We've switched to storing them in an egg carton, and I we make sure we rotate our stock eating the oldest eggs first. It's really working out pretty well.

We've really enjoyed the chickens. Now, if they'll just grow back their feathers, I could take so much better pictures of them!

First, I planted a couple of blackberry bushes over the weekend. I'm hoping they take well. I love blackberries! (sorry, no pictures)

We've started letting our chickens free range in the evenings (while the dog is put away) and I've been keeping a close eye on them around the garden.

Here one of the girls is looking for bugs around the onions, spinach and jalapenos.

Here are a few of my tomato plants along with my strawberries which are doing great! I even have some green berries on the plants. I'm keeping an eye on them!

I've been harvesting some of my spinach from the garden here and there. I have some lettuce in a wheelbarrow but it's been slow to grow this year, even before I moved it to the wheelbarrow.

I've also made it out to the Owasso Farmers Market the last two weeks. We got some asparagus the first week and last week I got some farm fresh breakfast sausage and some lettuce.

This coming weekend, they are supposed to have some locally grown green house tomatoes!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13551581750321722823noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12193735.post-52202436020582682112014-04-27T21:50:00.001-05:002014-04-27T21:50:25.347-05:005 birds roosting, An adventure in roosting. As I've already mentioned, we got 10 birds and split them with a friend. They came over and we randomly chose 5 birds of the 10 and loaded them up and sent them on their way.

We were happy owners of 5 chickens!

The first night, I had to put the hens in the coop. I'm guessing where they came from, they didn't have a coop. Anyway, I got them inside and close the coop door. They were now safe and sound, and I went back into the house to give them a bit to get settled in before I went back out and checked on them.

I went back out about 10 or 15 minutes later, and peeked in on them, and no one was on the roosts I made them! So, I opened the door and placed them all on the roosts, and they had a good night.

The next night, they all went into the house without a problem, and 3 of the 5 were on the roost. I picked up the 2 and placed them on the roost.

Well, the next day (2 days after our friends took 5 hens) they brought them back! They had bought some chicks at the farm supply store a few weeks back, and the 5 were picking and pecking on them. Understandably, that will never do.

Now, we're seeing here with a coop that from what I've learned can hold 10 birds, and it was holding 10 birds! That's not how I wanted to do this. I wanted a mix and a match. Different looks, not 10 that when they grow their feathers back all look the same!

I had nothing to fear though. My wife had it all under control and posted on Facebook to her friends to see if anyone was wanting 5 chickens. Then we waited.

That night, I went out to check on the new hens. 5 birds were inside the coop on the roosts. 5 were outside in the chicken yard. *sigh*

I got them all picked up and put in the coop, and I went ahead and placed them on the roost.

The next night, they all went inside, but only 7 birds were on the roosts. Again, I picked them up and placed them on the roost. The next night, I found 8 birds on the roosts. This was getting old. They weren't learning as fast as the first batch.

Luckily, my wife's friend said she'd take another 5 chickens! Just one more night. And sure enough, 8 birds roosting. And what I failed to mention was that the 2 that weren't, really, really wanted to cuddle up in the nesting boxes to sleep. So I learned to put a board in front of the nesting boxes so they couldn't get in them at night.

The next day, after the pickup, we were back down to 5 birds! I was so excited. That was, until night. Then we had 3 birds roosting and 2 not.

As I kept trying to teach, I finally go to 4 birds roosting.

After much research and asking on different groups online (like Backyard Chickens on G+) I found that it's not a big deal, so I wasn't going to worry about it too much

Last night, I forgot to put the board up to keep the chickens from getting in the laying boxes. So I went out to check, and sure enough, she was in there. I got her out and put her on a roost and placed the board up to keep her out.

Tonight, when I went out to close up the coop, I peeked in on them, and all 5 of our girls were on their roosts!

Mainly for their eggs. So Here is the chronicle of our coop.

March 28th
I started getting holes for a the posts of a new chicken coop we decided we wanted to build. The next day, We started the building!

March 29th
We took some 4x4's and cut them down and cemented them into the holes, then put one of those large pallets on it (7.5 ft x 3 ft)

Afterward, my son and I put down some plywood and then added some simple framing.

By the time we got that done, we'd basically ran out of daylight and had to wait to do anymore till the next day.

March 30th
My son and I measured and cut out the sides, and got them hung.

April 10th
There had been several things come up, so I didn't get to do much work over the weekend. I did manage to start getting things wrapped up and it was getting close to be ready for some chickens!

You can see we got the laying boxes built and I put some some chicken wire to keep them from roosting above the boxes.
April 11-13th
Over the next few days, we got the yard walls up and secured with chicken wire. We also got netting installed on the top hoping it would keep out aerial predators.

My wife did some more painting and the previous fall, we had some water barrels given to us, so we decided to install them.
April 15th
April 15th was the day we got our chickens. We got some ISA Browns. My wife found some on craigslist for $6/each if you get ten birds. So one of our friends decided to split the 10 between us.
They were 14 months old, and going through a molt. However, I thought these would be good to start with. They're cheaper than a lot we had seen and if there was a problem with the coop or the yard, The loss would be better. We also go our first egg that day!
April 19th
My uncle who has a guttering company came over and installed some guttering on the coop. I really wanted to be able to collect rainwater if at all possible from the coop to be used in the garden.
April 20th
We had some tree's growing up in places I didn't really want them, so I moved three of them close to the coop to help provide shade (one day in the future).

Today (April 27th)
So far, so good. We've done a few things that have not worked out so well, but overall, everything has been great. We're getting between 2 to 3 eggs a day (with a max of 5).

The Coop is right by the compost bins and garden. We're both pretty excited.
