Relaxation

Work has been so crazy lately. Long hours, high stress. You know, that kind of stuff. It's Saturday, and I've got plans for some hopefully relaxing time and (if I'm lucky) some good eats!

I'm headed to Skiatook lake today for some fishing! I know my son and my dad are going, and there is a possibility that my grandfather may go as well.

I'm really looking forward to this, now if I can only manage to come home with a bunch of fish, I'll be doing great!

Timechange

I hate time change. Especially Spring forward. That hour of lost sleep is murder. I really wish we would just adjust the clocks, and leave them that way. I don't care which way to leave them, just leave them.

I don't mind the fall back one as much as the spring one. There is something about the falling back of the clock, and the getting darker earlier, that just puts me in that snug feeling where I'm ready for bed, and want to curl up by a nice fire (if I had a fire place).

But, it's spring. And I do like Spring... It's my third favorite season (right behind Fall and Winter) but unfortunately, Spring means Summer isn't far away. And I don't care for summer (though I do love bikini's especially on my wife).

Anyway, enough rambling about lack of sleep. I'm ready now if it wasn't for work.

oh well.

Netflix

I love Netflix. I've talked about them before I'm pretty sure. I could just image what my life would have been like if they existed when I was single.

Well, recently they have added the ability to stream movies directly from them.

I've been awaiting the day that option was available to me. They are slowly turning it on for their subscribers. Well, after about a month of waiting, I was really going crazy. I wanted to be able to stream movies to my PC.

Now, normally, I wouldn't care. When I want to watch a movie, I want to watch it in my living room on my big TV and surround sound. However, I love movies playing as background noise. So, how cool could this be at work? But still no access.

Well, about a week or 2 ago, I was looking at this Gizmodo post, and they had a link you could click that would give your Netflix account access. So, when I clicked this link, and I checked my account, I had access. I was so happy.

So, what do I think? Selection was surprisingly good. And that is all I know. I've been so busy, that I haven't even had the chance to listen to a movie.

I do know that you'll get 1 hour of viewing for every $1 you spend on your account. Oh, and it requires IE. (No firefox here).

UPDATE: While going back and looking at the article, some people said the link had stopped working and later, people said it did work. So, if you're interested give it a shot. if it doesn't work, stop back by and try again later, who knows. Worse case, you should have it in June.

Planting

Yesterday, I got out and did some more work in the garden. I did lots of raking to get out some of grass that was in there. After that, I went to Atwoods to get some stuff...

I ended up getting 6 jalapeño plants, 3 bell peppers, 6 tomatoes, and some onion sets. I also got some lettuce, spinach, cilantro and corn seeds.

We may try a Three Sisters Garden where I'm planting the corn. Basically, you plant your corn followed by some pole beans. The beans climb up the corn stalks. Then you plant squash as a ground cover all in the same area. It lets you get more out of a small space. Sounds interesting. Not sure if we'll do the beans or not, but the corn and squash are going to happen.

This year, instead of using wimpy tomato cages, I picked up 2 stock panels. We cut them in half and tried staking them to the ground. (we had to make do with finding stakes around the house. I may go get some t-posts before the tomatoes start using the support.

I still need to mulch the garden, but it was dark, and I was tired when I finished yesterday.

Gardening

Wow, 2 posts in as many days, what's up with that?

Anyway, I feel pretty lousy today. Not sure if it's a cold or allergies. For me, the only difference is if I can make others sick. I would have stayed home today but I have too much to do at work. I got home today, and my wife said she was surprised I hadn't started my garden.

I have been too actually. So tonight, instead of sitting on the couch relaxing like I really planned to do, I took the tiller, and got to work.

I got everything tilled, which is a good thing since the pull broke. I pulled it right out. So, no stopping till it's done. It's an old tiller. It was (I guess is) my grandmothers tiller. But she doesn't use it anymore, so I have it.

While I was working, I put it in reverse, and the reverse broke. So that made backing up even harder.

I now have some work to do on the tiller, but I don't see a reason not to try to fix it. It may be old, but it is tougher than anything I could buy today.

I'm not sure what I'm going to plant yet. I know jalapenos and tomatoes. Other than that, no clue.

Hello?

Man, where have I been? Not blogging, that is for certain, huh?

Last Saturday was a busy day.
That morning, I was at the soccer fields helping get them ready for this years games. We were doing the initial marking of the fields, fixing bleachers, fixing nets, filling holes. I was there from 8 till 12:30, and I was one tired puppy when I came home.

That evening we had a Cub Scout banquet where my boy was suppose to get his Tiger badge, but because of a communication problem, they didn't get their awards. The promotion ceremony for the 2nd year Webelos into Boy Scouts was really cool.

Because of that, we missed the eclipse, but we did catch a really cool moon.

Work has been crazy, and I mean real crazy. So bad, I haven't wanted to go, but I have.

Hopefully, it wont be another week and a half till my next update.

Daughter Soccer

Well, today, my daughter had 4 soccer games (scrimmages). She played goalie at one point, and from what I hear, she got creamed. She got kicked in the ribs. From what she said, the girl that did it got carded (as she probably should have).

She is going to be so sore since she hasn't played soccer for about 2 years. She's only been to a couple practices. So, after 4 games (even short games, 23 minute halves) that's still a lot of running.

It was good to see her play. Especially since this is her senior year.

2 geeks in a pod

Friday night, my boy and I spent some good time together. My wife spent the evening hanging out with some of her friends. So, after we left the soccer fields (had a meeting), we stopped at the Jalapeño Grill and had dinner. We then came home and played video games.

When my wife came home she said hi and went upstairs and watched some TV. We went to bed about 1:00 AM!!! I couldn't believe it. He was playing his Nintendo DS and I was playing my new computer game (Vangaurd SoH).

We both had a good time.

He is so my clone!

Springtime in Oklahoma

It was a nice warm day today. The temperature was in the 70's. It was gorgeous!

As I was driving home, I smelled something that is unmistakably springtime in OK. Then, not only did I smell it, but I saw it.

Dead skunk.

Probably wouldn't have know what it was, if I hadn't have smelled it.

Since spring time is skunk mating season, you know why they are crossing the road... and they don't always make it.

Valentine's Day

Today is Valentine's Day... well, in the US. It's already tomorrow in Guam where my cousin lives.

Earlier today, I had a great post planned, but as I sit down to type it, it's gone. No where to be seen in my head.

My beautiful wife got me some new cologne and some cloths for Valentine's Day!

I'll just want to take a moment to wish my wonderful wife a very Happy Valentine's Day. I love you with all of my heart, and I always will.

Federal Refund

Friday, we got our Federal refund deposited into our bank account. Yea!

We aren't doing a lot of "fun" stuff with the refund, but doing stuff we need to get done. Eye Appointments, Dentist, gravel for the driveway, paying off bills. You know, that kind of stuff.

Smile

I just got an email that really made me chuckle. So I wanted to share and hopefully cause some smiles in the process.

  1. At Lunch time, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars. See if they slow down.
  2. Page yourself over the intercome. Don't disguise your voice.
  3. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.
  4. Put Your Garbage Can on your desk and Label It "In". (I've done this!)
  5. Put Decaf in the Coffee Maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.
  6. In the Memo Field of all your checks, write "For smuggling diamonds" (this would be too funny!)
  7. Finish all your sentences with "In accordance with the Prophecy." (Again too funny!)
  8. Dont use any punctuation
  9. As often as possible, skip rather than walk.
  10. Order a diet water whenever you go out to eat.
  11. Specify that your drive-through order is "To Go"
  12. Sing Along at the Opera.
  13. Go to a poetry recital and ask why the poems don't rhyme?
  14. Put mosquito netting around your work area and play tropical sounds all day. (I soooo want to do this!)
  15. Five days in advance, tell your friends you can't attend their party because you are not in the mood.
  16. Have your co-workers address you by your wrestling name, Rock Bottom.
  17. When the money comes out of the ATM, scream "I Won! I Won!"
  18. When Leaving the Zoo, Start running towards the parking lot, Yelling "Run for your Lives, they're loose!"
  19. Tell your children over dinner. "Due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of you go.

Super Bowl Ads

I'm not much of a Super Bowl watcher. The main reason I watch is for the commercials. Well, thanks to the internet, I no longer have to watch the Super Bowl to enjoy the commercials.

My wife told me they had a commercial on that said you could go to a web page and see the commercials, but she couldn't remember what it was. So, I did what any normal person would do. I went to Google and looked for it.

I'm not sure I found the one she saw advertised, but I did find one. http://sports.aol.com/nfl/superbowlads

Enjoy.

UPDATE:
I believe this is the site that was advertised on the TV. Last night, it was so busy, I couldn't get on.

State Refund

Saturday I filed our 2006 Taxes. I happened to check my bank account this morning, and I had my State Tax refund.

Woo Hoo!

I love E-File and Direct Deposit.

Microsoft Time Zone

While hitting the topics this morning before I get extremely busy, I saw a link to download Microsoft Time Zone. This app is cool.

Where I work, I deal with people in Australia, New Zealand, and TiJuana. My cousin currently lives in Guam. It's really hard to keep up. I'm always asking "What time is it there?"

So, long story short, you set up Microsoft Time Zone with the Timezones you want to track. Then you right click the app in your taskbar, and click on Show My Locations, and all the locations you set up pop up, and you see the local time.

It also appears that you can set the timezone of your machine to these locations as well. But since I do little traveling, I don't think I'll use that feature.

Pretty spiffy. I think this comes with Vista, but since I don't see me installing Vista anytime soon, I grabbed it.

Sick Son

Day 2 of being home with my sick son.

I sorta feel bad because I didn't really think he was sick yesterday, but he gave me a reason to think he was faking.

Last Thursday, he came home from school early complaining about a stomach ache. I'm not sure about Friday. I heard no word about him not feeling good Saturday or Sunday. Come Monday morning, he starts complaining that he feels like throw up.

Well, to me, it sounded like he just didn't want to go to school. Sick last week, find over the weekend, sick Monday. Well, I decided that he could stay home from school, but no Playstation. I didn't want him to get use to the idea that faking being sick to stay home is a cool thing. Since he actually agreed to no PS, I got suspicious that he might really be sick.

Late Monday night, I was sitting with him and he felt hot. So I took his temperature. It was 101 degrees. Wow, he is REALLY sick! This morning he woke up at 4:45 complaining that he didn't sleep last night. I took his temperature and he had a fever of 101.8.

Called the Dr, and they tested for flu and strep. Turns out, he has both! Yes, that is right, both Strep and the Flu. Poor guy. About 6:00 this evening, I took his temp and it was up to 103.8 so he go some Ibuprofen. It was down to 101.3 about an hour and half after the Ibuprofen. At least it was down.

Go!

Today was the big race! You could feel the excitement in the air!

With the Tigers racing first, we were very excited. My boy ended up in the second heat. First up though was one of the other boys in our Den. He did very well ending up first in his heat.

The second Tiger heat was on, and he did ok. He took 3rd, 5th, and 5th. He was disappointed, but I was very proud of him. He ended up getting a participation trophy which is is very proud of, and he also got a display case for his car (which he is also proud of).

In a couple months is the Rain Gutter Regatta. We'll see how he does there.

2006 Taxes Filed

My taxes are filed! Yea! Now I sit back and wait for my return.

Last year when I filed, I used TaxSlayer to do my taxes. I had used them the last few years cause they are so much cheaper than TurboTax. Because of a mistake I had made several years ago, I was concerned about using TaxSlayer, so I double checked my return with TurboTax and had the same value, so I filed with TaxSlayer so it wouldn't cost as much to file.

This year, I noticed that when I entered my child care into it, my return didn't increase. I thought that was strange, so decided to double check again with TurboTax. I'm glad I did.

I had 430 larger return using TurboTax, and I also had a 111 larger state return. That more than makes up for the 55.90 filing fee for TurboTax.

When I help my daughter with her taxes, I'll probably still use TaxSlayer, since she is still using the EZ forms, but I my run them through both programs, just to make sure.

Get Set...

Tonight, we went and weighed in the car.

We got there right at 6 so we could weigh it in and have time to tweak it if necessary.

I ended up helping unload the track and getting it set up. Once that was set up, we checked in the car. Luckily, we only had to add a couple of BB's to make it hit the 5oz mark (and we didn't have to remove any... yea!)

We'll see how the race goes tomorrow.

Feb. 17, 2009

That is the day my friends.

The day that all the over-the-air broadcasts will go digital (AKA HD).

So, be warned if you are out buying for a new TV. If you get an analog (SD) TV, you'll need a tuner box after that date.

Thursday, January 25, 2007

On your mark...

This weekend is the big Pine Wood Derby Race!!! Both my boy and I are excited.

Tomorrow night we go check in the car. He is only 7, so I used most of the tools in making this car. He did help though. It was his car, so what we did was up to him. I told him, if he didn't pick something, he'd race a rectangle down the track. So he helped with design, painting, color choices, numbering and some sanding. Assuming he is in Cub Scouts next year, he'll hopefully get to do more himself.

The race is Saturday.

Birthday Party Continued

Well, we made it through the birthday party last night. And was I exhausted when it was over.
2 of the boys were still awake when I went to bed at 11:00. They were watching TV, so if they would just be still, it probably wouldn't take them long.

Chuck-E-Cheese was a huge success, they all had a really good time there.

I'm up right now cooking bacon as their wake up call. I'll make pancakes when the bacon is all done.

Well, I guess I should get back to it.

Birthday Party

ARGH!

Birthday Cake 2.0

We are having my son's birthday party today no matter what. My wife said "Even if we have to rent a snow mobile we are having it!"

So, it was time to make another birthday cake.

I think it looks much better than his first cake.

New Cake:

First Cake:

Politics

Well, it is official.

I plan on being much more involved in the presidential election this year than any other year.

Why? Hillary Clinton is running for President. Even typing that is scary.

I plan on doing everything I can to keep that from happening.

TV Update

After last nights surgery, the TV is doing great. I had noticed after I posted last night, that the picture seemed a bit grainy. It was disappointed, but happy that my work overall had been successful.

This evening, while looking at the TV, I realized I had done some re-wiring of my system to get the satellite to work on my replacement TV (it didn't have s-video). So, I looked at my wiring of my system, and tweaked it a bit, and my picture was crisp and clear!

While at work today, I thought I was going to have to still buy a new TV, but now, it looks like I'll be good for a while.

That is really what I wanted. I'd like to wait to till I've paid off our debt before spending the money for a new HD TV.

Surgery is over...

Right as the surgery began, I took this picture while waiting for my soldering iron to heat up.

I know many of you have been on pins and needles as the surgery has been going on. Initially, everything was going well, but while closing up, we had some problems which required me to open the patient back up.

After some more stressful moments, I was able to close. It appears the the patient will make full recovery. I'm not sure how much, if any this has shortened his life. I'm hoping this will make it till next year. Oh, and not only is it doing well, but Alton Brown was the first image my TV showed after the surgery. Isn't life grand? hehe

I'm really excited that I was able to replace those 2 parts. The solder job is probably really crappy, but no one can see it, and all it has to do is hold the parts together. Not trying to win a contest or anything.

Here is the page I found online while searching for "Phillips Magnavox tv burnt plastic". As I said in an earlier post, I found that the part they talked about in that page is the same on mine that was burnt. I also went ahead and replaced the resistor that was next to it since it had burnt it. I wasn't sure if the part was gone or not, but figured it was best to err on the side of caution, and since I already had the TV open, I might as well replace both parts.

I'm really rather excited right now.

Surgery Begins

The surgery has begun.

You can read more about the Death and Autopsy of my TV if you haven't already.

I love technology

Wow, what a week.

There were 2 items that really caught my attention this week.

The first is commercial airplanes that have anti-missile systems on them. I first saw this article at CNN this week. Fed-Ex is flying the planes with this new system on them.
"An MD-10 cargo jet equipped with Northrop Grumman's Guardian anti-missile system took off from Los Angeles International Airport on a commercial flight Tuesday"
The article goes on to state that no passenger planes have ever been downed by shoulder-fired missiles outside of war zones. It will be a long time before this is on a lot of planes, not the least of which is cost associated since these systems will not be cheap. Still a cool idea.

The second is a rail gun that was tested Wednesday. You can read the whole article at fredericksburg.com.
The railgun works by sending electric current along parallel rails, creating an electromagnetic force so powerful it can fire a projectile at tremendous speed.
This is truly sci-fi come to life. From how I read this, it looks like the Navy may be planning on changing the big guns on their ships to rail guns.

We are talking about a 200 to 250 nautical mile range on these bad boys. The 5 inch guns have a range of about 20 nautical miles.

These rail gun, with a range of at least 200 nautical miles, can hit a target in about 6 minutes. It takes Tomahawk missiles 8 minutes to travel that distance.
And the cost of each rail gun round will start around $1000. Tomahawk cruise missiles cost nearly $1 Million each.

Sweet!

Birthday Cake

Well, I baked my son's birthday cake last week and got around to decorating it today. It's ok. Especially since I've not decorated a cake in years.

Thought I would share. Don't make too much fun of me. Hopefully next weekend the cake will look better.

UPDATE: BTW, I forgot to mention that my boy helped some on the decorating.

TV Update

I just ordered a capacitor and a resistor that hopefully will allow me to fix my TV and save me having to buy a new TV.

Don't get me wrong. I would LOVE a new TV. A nice LCD HD TV. That would be awesome!

But I really don't want to spend the money to go HD yet. And if you know me, you'll know it would be hard for me to get a HD TV and not upgrade the Satellite to HD too.

Anyway. The best part about this is? The parts with shipping only cost me $10.11. It would have been less, but I had to order 10 of the capacitor. I lucked out and was able to get just one of the resistors.

Once the parts come in I'll give you all an update.

UPDATE:
The parts cost 10.11, but once shipping was added, it cost $18.72. Still not a bad price if I can get it to work. Parts should be here Wednesday.

Profanity Filter

Do you ever got to web pages that had profanity on them?

I know one of the pages I read several times a day sometimes has some. It irritates me.

Well, while reading Lifehacker today, they had a link to a Profanity Filter. I haven't installed it yet, but it sounds interesting.

Once the script is installed, it uses a list with pre-defined words you don't wish to see. It replaces these words with ***.

Lifehacker made a sentence to see how it worked. The sentence came out:
This *** is the ***. Every *** on the planet should install this ***.
Sorta cool. You are suppose to be able to easily update the filtered word list. Allowing words by default it doesn't and adding words as well.

It's here

The nastiness predicted (aka ice) by the weathermen is here. People have been leaving work like rats from a sinking ship all day. There is only 2 or 3 employees in my office and 3 contractors (who get paid by the hour, so I understand them staying). The department next door is completely gone.

About noon or so, one guy called that had just left and said the sidewalks are icy, and the roads are slushy. That was 1.5 hours ago.

Should be an interesting drive home.

Autopsy

I got up this morning and decided to do an autopsy on the TV to make sure it was the same problem I had read about online. As you can see the behemoth's insides.
If you click on these pictures, you'll get a better picture, but below the back of the tube there are several metal "walls" where the capacitor is located.

Here is the culprit. Again, if you click on the picture, you'll get a much better view, but #2 is the capacitor that has gone bad and is sparking. You can see in this picture that #1 has burn marks on it from the sparking #2 has done. I hope this is easier to fix than it looks like it is going to be.

Death in the Family

A very dear friend of the family died tonight... Our 32" Phillips Magnavox TV.

I woke up about midnight and smelled something not right, but I wasn't sure what it was. I got up, and I'm sniffing the WHOLE HOUSE! (my house is over 100 years old so you never know).

Anyway, I could not track down the smell. I finally decided it was strongest in the living room. My daughter was still awake, so I had her come in and sniff it. (she thought I was sniffing something else if you know what I mean). But when she came in, she agreed it smelt like burnt plastic. It wasn't anything overwhelmingly strong, but I have a super sensitive nose.

Anyway, I started sniffing everything that had electric. When I got to the entertainment center (this took a bit) I heard a clicking as well. I moved the entertainment center out so I could see what was wrong behind it, but when I did, I found the clicking was coming FROM the entertainment center. Well, I tracked it to the TV. Which is where the smell of burnt plastic was coming from too.

From looking online, it appears that I've had a capacitor burn out.

Now I'm left with a difficult choice. Buy a new TV, or try to replace the capacitor. The capacitor will be cheap (if I can find one. Others that have had this problem said repair shops didn't want to part with it without installing it themselves and charging a huge amount), and a new TV will not be.

The TV is over 7 years old (but under 9). So it's lived a good and relatively long life.

Guess I'll go sleep on it. At least I know the house wont burn down. That would be a lousy present for my son right before his birthday.

Almost Birthday Time

It's almost my son's birthday. We're planning a get together with some of his friends this weekend, and a couple of the boys will be able to spend the night.

What do I notice today? It looks like a strong winter storm is expected to hit Friday and stay through Sunday.

I hope we can have the party. I'd hate to tell him we'll have to move it.

1 TB Hard Drive

Hitachi is expected to launch a 1TB hard drive during the first quarter of this year.

Holy Cow!

1 TB?!?!?! (That stands for terabyte.) And this is for home computers.

According to the ars technica article the specs are:
7200 rpm
32MB buffer
SATA 3.0Gb/s or Parallel-ATA 133
And with a price tag of $399. The price wont be too bad either.
That price translates to about 40 cents per gigabyte, or 0.04 cents per megabyte.
Not bad. Not bad at all. That will get rid of your hard drive headaches... at least for a while.

I remember our first first 120 MB hard drive. I thought I'd never need a larger hard drive again.

How long till 1TB sounds small? The article also talks about a 37.5 TB drive expected to be launched in the next decade.

WL - 1/5 check-in

Ok, it's been 24 weeks since I started loosing weight.

Weight wise, I got my lowest on Thanksgiving morning I believe and I weighed in at 185. Since then I have been fluctuating. Though, I've made it through the holiday season with only gaining 5 pounds. To me, that is a huge accomplishment!

The stall has been because of a lack of desire (the real culprit in weight loss). I had hurt my back when it snowed, and that took some time to get over, and I really didn't feel like going to the gym. I think I only managed to go 2 times in December.

Now that it is 2007, I've been thinking about my weight again. For the most part, I'm happy about my weight (assuming I can keep it below 190). (Now distribution, that is another thing.) So I'll continue to go to the gym on a regular basis, and working out 5 to 6 times a week for now, and I may trim that down, we'll see.

Christmas

While reading my wifes blog today, I realized I hadn't really posted about Christmas. I'm a bad boy.

Christmas was great! We had a lot of fun. Both of my kids got WAY too much stuff, and they had a blast opening it all. My wife liked her Christmas presents. I had bought her a new comforter she wanted, around Thanksgiving, and had it hid well. I would have wrapped it, but wasn't sure how to do it. Ended up just wrapping it. So, as soon as she saw it, she knew what it was. I hate that. I like the wonder of whats under the paper.

I really enjoyed my presents as well. I got Pirates 2 and Hildalgo. Both movies that I really wanted. I got some new house shoes, which was also something I wanted. We also got a new tent from my parents. I was excited about that. We needed it!

We also got a new calendar that has all of the birthday/anniversaries of all the family members. I really like that. We got one last year, and again this year. Very handy. (Thanks Laura!)

I also got a ball cap with 2 led lights in the bill. So, it's a handy flash light, without having to hold it. I also got a set of those flashlights you shake to charge. No batteries which is always nice. Think people thought I was in the dark?

There was more, but I don't need to go through it all.

Happy Birthday My Love!

I wanted to take a moment this morning, and wish my adorable, beautiful, caring, devoted, enchanting, funny, generous, humorous, intelligent, joking, kind, lively, mischievous, napping, original, pretty, quick, radiant, stunning, tenacious, unforgettable, vibrant, wonderful, xpressive, youthful, zestful wife a wonderful and very

HAPPY "29th" BIRTHDAY!

Sadness

I'm really sad tonight.

I just found out that my son's best friend, and our next door neighbor, will be moving at the end of the month. He doesn't know it yet. I think he'll find out tomorrow when his friend comes home.

This will be the first time that he has had a friend move away. It will probably happen a lot in his life, but this will be the first time.

I'm sad for him.

Web startup pages

I was reading an article today that suggested people change their web browser start-up pages from the default to something different.

That sorta surprised me. I've always changed my startup page from the default to something different.

One link I didn't know about that was a suggestion was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Randompage which does just what you would expect. It opens a Random page from wikipedia. Neat idea.

For years I've used the http://my.yahoo.com page as my startup. And since it is customizable, it lets me choose what I want to see. Lately, I've moved over to the http://www.google.com/ig since I use so many of Google's products, I can get a birds eye view from a single page.

So, have any other suggestions?

Work sucks

Well, maybe not completely, but after being away for 10.5 days, I don't want to be here.

For those family members that read this blog, please email me your email address, and I'll invite you to a family only blog.

Some things will still be done here, but other family members also will be able to put stuff on it. But if you don't send me your email address, you'll not get invited and not be able to read it.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!

I can't believe it is actually 2007. It's amazing how fast 2006 has past. In fact, it's amazing how fast the years have past since 2000.

I hope you all have a very safe new year.

Now get some rest. It'll be time to go back to work before you know it.

Pokes Win!

It was cool to see the Pokes won the Independence Bowl game last night!

I thought they were going to choke there at the end, but they didn't!

Woo Hoo!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Well, it's Christmas Eve morning.

And from the Santa NORAD radar, Santa has been sighted in Japan.

This will be an interesting morning.
See, I'm preaching this morning. Yep, you read that right.

I guess I'm about a ready as I'm going to be.

Anyway, tonight we go to my in-laws for our big Christmas get-together there. I can't wait!

I hope everyone has a very merry, and safe Christmas Eve today.

Merry Christmas Adam!

I just wanted to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas Adam!

What?

You don't know what Christmas Adam is?

Well, even my 6 year old can tell you that Adam came before Eve.

Track Santa

If you were not aware, NORAD tracks Santa on this Christmas Eve journey.

You can track him here.

Merry Christmas.

WL - 12/22 check-in

I have done a lousy job of exercising this wee. I have gone a total of zero times this week.

I've gotten back to more of a normal diet for me. Not completely pigging out, but eating more of the Christmas snacks and such people have brought. Even then though, I think I've done ok. So what does the scales say?

I've lost 3 pounds since last week. That in itself is a miracle.

We have Christmas Eve at my wifes parents, and Christmas day at my parents. And lots of good food at both. I've also got the week off next week.

We'll see how the scales look next week.

Ugliest Christmas Ornament

Last night, when I was talking about the new angel being the second ugliest ornament, my wife thought I probably should put a picture of the ugliest ornament on our tree.

I decided she was right.

I find it funny, that it is also an angel. This angel was made by our daughter when she was maybe 3 or so. She was very proud of it though over the years she'd rather have it in the trash.

Childhood Memories

I love my wife. I really do.

At Christmas time every year, my wife talks about this angel that they had on the top of her tree growing up. It was a green tin with an angel stamped on it. It also had angel hair on the bottom. (clouds?)

This is a picture of it.

Anyway, she found one on eBay. So she started bidding on it. I knew she REALLY wanted it so I encouraged her to get it. She could have it for her birthday present.

Anyway, she got it. She was the winning bid tonight. I'm happy for her. Next year, she'll get to hang this ugly lovely angel on our tree.

I'm excited for her. I know this really means a lot to her.

Now the second ugliest ornament on our tree is the most expensive.

(We only payed 100 times more than what her dad probably payed for it at TG&Y back in the day)

Children's Christmas Party

Saturday's Children's Christmas party went well. We ended up with 13 kids. And they had a blast! One of the kids said it "was the best Christmas ever". This is really good to hear. Some of this kids haven't had the best home life, so having something that was entirely made just for them was what many of them needed.

We watched the 2 movies. They got to decorate Christmas cookies, make Christmas cards, make bookmarks, and candy canes (non-eatable). The clowns where a HUGE hit! All of the kids just loved them.

Dinner was also a big hit. It all tasted good and I'm pretty sure I surprised a few people that didn't know I could cook. The turkey and ham both turned out wonderful. I almost burned the rolls, but I didn't.

When 7:00 rolled around, I was ready to go home. It had been a long day. I got to church Saturday morning at 10:45.

I'm glad we did it, and I would expect us to do it again. I'm just glad I have a year to rest.

Living Christmas Tree

The Living Christmas Tree at First Baptist Church Bartlesville was really good last night. I really enjoyed it and I think so did my son. Afterwards, we went to one of the local parks, and looked at Christmas lights.

When we left, I decided to stop and put gas in the van since we'll be taking it Wednesday to see the Rhema lights. So, I put gas in the van, and tried to clean the windows (stress on tried). Struggled to put the locking gas cap back on the tank, and by the time I did that, I got in the van and we left. I got about 3 blocks away, and realized I left the gas receipt. Normally, I'd probably just left it, but since I need the receipt to get reimbursed, we turned around and went back to QT for the receipt.

Next stop was Braums from some ice cream. I had a single scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough. My son had a double dip of chocolate and strawberry.

It was a really good evening. And as of this moment, I'm really looking forward to tonight.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Do I have a busy weekend coming up or what?

Tonight, I am driving our church van to Bartlesville for the Living Christmas Tree they are having at FBC. Then, tomorrow, we are having a children's activity at church. We'll be showing movies (How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon) and the The Toy that Saved Christmas(Veggie Tales)). and having crafts. We'll have some clowns there (my parents) as well.

We are also cooking for the kids. Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, green beans, rolls, stuffing, and pie. I'm doin the cooking. That isn't bad. I like to cook, and know how, but this will be my first time for a Turkey. This could be interesting. :)

Sunday, I have Christmas food baskets to shop for. 3 of them. Again, this could be fun.

I'll need Monday to get here so I can rest.

Shoes

My son has FINALLY learned to tie his shoes.

It only took a girl that was a year younger than him to tie his shoes to make him do it, but I'm not going to argue why he learned, just that he finally learned!

Who's on First?

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, "Who's on First?" might have turned out something like this:

Costello calls to buy a computer from Abbott

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business? What do you have?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal? What do I need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with some straight answers.? What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?
ABBOT T: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!
???????? (A few days later)
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?
ABBOTT: Click on "START"...........

Baby on the way

Not mine, though that would be a miracle.

I found out tonight, that my sister and her husband are expecting their third child!!!

This is really cool!

It actually gets cooler.

The other day, my niece asked her mom for a baby sister. My sister told her that she needs to ask God. A little bit later, she saw her with her head down and her hands clasped. It looked like she was praying. Then she ran over to my sister and said "Mommy, I asked Jesus for a baby sister, and he said YES!"

Timing was about right.

They just found out today, but my sister gave me the OK to tell people. I know of at least 2 family members who read, so don't feel bad they didn't tell you.

Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention. After Jesus said yes, my niece said "Thank you!"

Cables

I've recently found what appears to be a very good source for ordering cables.

monoPrice.com

I recently ordered 2 - 50ft RCA cables and a 75 ft monitor cable for a projector installation we've done at our church. I got the 3 cables with shipping for only $57.59

I've installed the cables, and the monitor cable looks great. the RCA cable is for use with a VCR (if needed). Anyway, the quality appears very good. I wanted to pass it along. I got all the cables cheaper than I expected to pay for just 1 cable.

Oh, and BTW, they have other stuff besides cables.

WL - 12/8 check-in

First off, I realize that I skipped my weigh in last week. A foot of snow can do that do ya. :)

So, it's been 2 weeks since Thanksgiving. Since Thanksgiving, I've gained 2.5 pounds. Which isn't too bad. Realistically though, I probably gained close to 5 pounds, and have then lost half of that.

Still, since I started, I've lost 34.5 pounds.

I've done a lousy job exercising this week. I think Sunday is the only day I made it.

Mothers Milk

This is just too good not to share with you.

I will also say that this is probably the funniest drawing I have seen my son do yet.

It appears that my son has a journal that they do at school each day. They write a sentence and draw a picture.

On November 8th, as you can see below, the sentence was "Mothers feed their babies milk."

So, what does my son draw? A naked woman with boobs. A baby at one boob, another kid in the background, and it appears the other boob is leaking. hehe. Click on the picture for a better view. It's too funny.

Snow, Snow Everywhere

I'm sure everyone is more than aware that Oklahoma had some snow storm last week. Here at my house, we had around 8 inches of snow on top of probably an inch of ice.

I really enjoyed it as did the kids since they got to skip school. I stayed home on Thursday and Friday. I worked from home on Thursday (much more than I planned on), and Friday since I had already worked all 40 hours that week planned on taking the day off (even though I worked several hours) *sigh*

I did manage to get to the Collinsville park with my boy and the neighbors. We all had a good time (except my wife who had to work).

This is my favorite series of pictures.

Take a close look at him in this picture. Especially his feet, head and rear. :)

Space Derby

About a wee ago, after I got off work. My boy and I started working on this rocket for the Space Derby next week.

He designed what he wanted. He helped some on the body, but had problems using the tools. And he painted it himself. (can you tell?)

He is very proud of his rocket.

Well, Tuesday was the race and he did very well. He came in second place in his race. They took the first and second place winners of each race (for each age group) and raced again. So, in his second race, he came in third place. I was way impressed. He got a little trophy that holds his racer and it has a little plaque on it saying he came in 3rd place in the Space Derby.

Language Arts Test

So, this is funny, especially if you know me. I expected at 60%, not a 98%. Proof it was an easy test.

Your Language Arts Grade: 98%

Way to go! You know not to trust the MS Grammar Check and you know "no" from "know." Now, go forth and spread the good word (or at least, the proper use of apostrophes).

Shopping Pt4

Wow, what a day!

I am so tired.

After looking at the ads all day yesterday, we came home, and I looked at the ads until about 1 AM setting up my game plan (or shopping plan as the case may be). The alarm went off at 4:00 AM, and I was at Best Buy by 4:15.

As I posted earlier, nothing went according to plan, but I did mostly get everything I wanted.

I took about a 2 hour break from about 2:15 till 4:15. I unloaded the car, sorted through everything, and had a bite to eat (first all day, too busy shopping to eat). I went back looking for a bit more, and did pick up a couple more presents.

I'm not home, and exhausted. But it was a good day. Now I just have to get the house looking like it's Christmas time, and not a train wreck.

Shopping Pt3

After standing in the check-out line for over an hour. I was ready to get out of GameStop. After that, I went to 5 more stores and only bought 1 present. Not the day I was hoping for.

After those 5 stores, I decided to back to Best Buy to see what else they might have. While I was there, I found what I was looking for earlier!!! It was soooo cool!

As I've been writing this, I've been in yet another line.

What started off as a rather slow day is turning out pretty well.

More Later

Shopping Pt2

Well, Best Buy went OK. I got 3 of the 4 things I went for. Unfortunately, I didn't get one of the presents I went for. I'll find what I'm after somewhere else. I'm now in line at GameStop. I've been here for 34 minutes already, and I've got 26 more to go before the store opens.

More later.

Shopping Pt1

I am Crazy!

It is 4:32 a.m. and I'm dead center behind the back of Best Buy. As I was walking to the back of the line I asked what time some got there (about half way to the back, and they got there at 3:30).

More later.

Black Friday

It's Black Friday!!!

I'm off to do some shopping like a mad man.

Have fun.

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Happy Thanksgiving

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving everyone!

WL - 11/23 check-in

It's been 18 weeks since I started this process to lose some weight and basically just get in better shape (I still say round is a shape).

With all the eating I did last week, I would not have been surprised if I had gained weight.

Well, I didn't.

I lost 3 pounds since last Friday. No change in my stomach and chest.

Normally, I weigh in each Friday. But I'm pretty sure that I'll be getting up at the crack of dawn and going shopping. No time to weigh and measure, so I figured I'd do it today.

Baptism

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a very long time.
It's only 1:28, but worth every second. I'd even suggest it on dial-up. Especially if you go to church.

Police

Tuesday, my boys Cub Scouts den went to the Collinsville Police Department.

They got to see a police car and play with the lights and sirens.

They met with the Chief of Police, they were finger printed and they got to see dispatch.

The kids had a great time!

Jim Giles.

Wow, I knew this day was coming, but now that it is here, it's hard to believe.

Jim Giles, has been the Chief Meteorologist on KOTV for the last 25 years.
He is now retiring on November 22.

He's by far one of the best meteorologists that I have ever watched.

You can read more about his career on KOTV's web page.

Brother-in-law home

Friday, my brother-in-law came home to Oklahoma from Iraq (via Maryland for about a week). It was so good to see him (and his wife). We've spent the last two evenings with the whole family. Last night we had pizza and tonight, we had lasagna. It was soooooo good, both nights!

Friday was the first time I've seen much of the family since I've lost my weight. One of them asked me if I had malaria. I told him, "Nope, bird flu". When we got home from the airport, my father-in-law told me I've lost enough weight.

Anyway, it's late and morning comes early tomorrow.

Friday, November 17, 2006

WL - 11/17 check-in

17 weeks down.

I now stand at 5.5 inches lost in my stomach and still at 4.5 inches lost in my chest.
I'm also down 34 pounds since the start of this adventure.
(If you found any of it, you can keep it, please do not return to sender).

The medium shirts my wife bought me fit very nice. I've had lots of complements.

Four weeks ago, I talked about moving down a size in my jeans, well, it may be time to do it again. But I don't have any that I can try on, so that means it's time to go shopping.

What makes this week so good is the fact that yesterday was the first of much eating I'll be doing over the next week. And I didn't gain any weight. There may be hope for me to make it through Thanksgiving without too much gain.

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Happy Birthday

Oklahoma. You turn 99 today.

Let the centennial celebrations begin! (which is still strange to me since we haven't turned 100, but I guess it in celebration of the upcoming centennial birthday all the things are planned.)

Well, no matter.

Happy Brirthday... Oooooooooooooooooooooooooklahoma where the winds come sweeping down the plains...

(You're sining it aren't you?)

Rolls Update

Well, the rolls I made were a hit. I had several compliments.

I ate 3. Not too bad. I would have had more if I hadn't have been losing weight and didn't want to gain it all back... today.

Rolls

Tonight, after getting home from church, I made homemade yeast rolls for the first time!

I love rolls. Shoot, I love bread! Especially yeast rolls. Tomorrow, our office is having a Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow. Mostly non-traditional stuff. The last few years, I've made my "cowboy dip". Not cowboy as in the Pokes, just cowboy. But there were already several dips that was being brought, so I didn't want to add another.

I really had a hard time, then I thought of bread. Can't eat a meal without bread. (OK, I can't eat a meal without bread). So I signed up.

Course, I never thought about the fact that I've never made them before.

Well, so far, so good. Guess we'll see how they are doing in the morning.

Monday, November 13, 2006

Happy Birthday

Today is my daughters 18th birthday.

Wow, 18 years. That's just crazy. She'll be graduating in May, and before we know it moving out. YEA! seriously though, there were days I wondered if she'd see 18.

Tonight, we are going to Red Lobster for dinner. She loves it there.

If you read this sister, I love you and I'm very proud of the woman you are turning into.

Veterans Day

Friday, at my son's school, they had a Veterans Day assembly. They asked all the Cub Scouts and Brownies that wanted to take part in the event to come in their uniform. When I told my boy of the invitation, he was excited!

Friday, he proudly wore his uniform to school. My wife and father-in-law got to go watch. My wife tole me I would have been very proud of him and that he did a great job.

My boy was part of the Color Guard when they Posted the Colors and when they Retrieved the Colors, he got to carry the American Flag.

My wife did tell me of one cute thing that happened. As he was carrying the flag back, he was concentrating on holding the heavy flag up and making sure it didn't touch the ground that he wasn't looking up. Well, in the gym where they had the ceremony, there were basketball goals with nets on them. And the eagle on his flag got caught up in the net. Thankfully, there was someone there to help him get untangled.

I wish I could have been there to see it.

We had several good pictures from the event, but since they had other kids in the pictures, I didn't want to post them. Here was a picture of him as he walked in front of my wife. Can you see the concentration on his face?

More Football

Ok, I can't believe it.

Unranked Kansas State just beat fourth ranked Texas, 45-42.

What I saw of it was a good game. But Kansas State almost blew it.

What a day. The Pokes are headed to some bowl, and Texas got beat.

Go Pokes!

Well, the Pokes one today. And if I remember correctly from what the news said last night. That makes us....

BOWL BOUND!

WOO HOO!

Soccer Over

Today, we officially finished our Fall soccer season today with our soccer party.

We met at Mazzio's Pizza here in C-ville and I handed out trouphys. I also made an award for each kid pointing out something good about their play this year.

Parents and kids liked this I think.

Whew.

Here are a couple of pictures from when we had our pictures made this year.

Cub Scout Popcorn Sales

Tonight I went and picked up the popcorn my boy sold so we can start delivering.

As I've stated before, he sold over $730 worth of popcorn. That is a lot of popcorn. But you should have seen what I saw tonight.

The pack sold over $18,000 worth of popcorn. That is right. I didn't put the comma in the wrong spot. over $18,000. That means that the if we sell all the popcorn that was ordered (order first, pay when you get it), then the pack will receive around $6,300 plus the fact that this region will also get $6,300.

I still don't know if my boy is one of the top 3 sellers, but the top seller sold over $2,500 himself. That's darn impressive (and from what I could tell, he did it, not his parents).

WL - 11/10 check-in

It's hard to believe that I've been working out for 16 weeks now.

As of this morning, I have lost 32.5 pounds. 4.5 inches in my chest and 4.75 inches in my stomach.

This week, my wonderful wife bought me 3 new shirts. Get this, they are mediums! I can't tell you the last time I was in a medium shirt. Sorta strange to go from XL to M. That'll be a hard adjustment. But one I think I can get use to.

This has really been pretty incredible. I still have problems not stopping at every mirror and just staring. Not because of being vain, but out of shock.

I've "wanted" to lose weight before, but the truth is I didn't. I didn't want to do what it really took to do it. What it took for me is to decide that I really wanted the weight off. And for me, it's been a two step process.

Eat less. I know this sounds crazy, especially with all the take this pill and keep eating what you're eating and you'll lose weight. That doesn't work. I've cut back a lot on what I eat. Instead of 3 cheese burgers, I'll usually now only eat 1 (may 2 )
Instead of 2 sandwiches at lunch, I'm eating 1. Stop drinking pop. There are 120 calories in a single can of pop.

Exercise. I'd say exercise more, but I wasn't exercising at all. I was spending between 1 and 1.25 hours 6 days a week. That was harder to do than the eating less. I've started slacking off a bit, but my weight loss has also slowed down. I'd spend over half of my time there on the treadmill and some time lifting weights.

I don't think I'm done losing weight, but with the weeks that are coming up, I think maintaining my weight would be a great.

Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away. Yummy!

Home Safe and Sound

My brother-in-law is home on leave from Iraq. Safe and sound. He'll come this direction next week to see everyone before heading back.

It's good to have him home.

I am proud of every man and woman that serve in our military.

Thank you!

Chess

I taught my boy how to play Chess tonight.

I beat him, but I got a bit worried a couple of times. I gave him lots of help, and in doing so, didn't pay attention. Oops. But it was a good start. I was very proud of him.

He'll also be able to earn his Cub Scout belt loop once he can tell me the pieces names and how they move.

He really liked it. We'll probably play again soon.

Fear

One of my worse fears has come to pass. The Democrats have control of both the House and the Senate.

This is going to be a long two years I'm afraid.

Fall Morning

This morning, I took my son to the bus stop. While we were waiting on the bus, I happened to look up and saw how pretty the moon looked. I also noticed a really beautiful tree changing colors. It was amazing.

After he got on the bus, I came home and got my camera and took a couple pictures before heading to work.

These aren't as good as the real thing, but I think they are still nice.

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.

My boy lost yet another tooth tonight.

It seems like the tooth has been loose for a year. Probably not, but it has been loose all summer at least. He looks so cute.

And I guess he can officially sing...

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.

Truck wreck

This is different from a train wreck.

On my way to work this morning, there was a tractor trailer that looked like it tried to take the clover leaf from 169 onto I-44 a bit to fast and turned over.

First time I've ever seen one of those. Didn't look like much of a mess, so I don't think he was going real fast... just too fast.

I hope the driver was ok.

I saw the channel 2 news van there, but I couldn't find anything on their web page.

Voting

Today was election day.

I went to vote before going to work this morning. I took my boy with me today so he could see how it all worked. He really enjoyed it. It was his first time to go too. I doubt it will be the last.

We barely got him to the bus stop before the bus got there, but even if he would have missed it, it was a good experience.

Speaking of my children, in the next election, my daughter will be able to vote.

Scary.

Jam and Spice

I finally got around to making my blackberry jam preserves today. I made 8 - 8 oz jars.

They are not seedless preserves, but that's OK, I don't mind so much. Specially since blackberries are just so darn yummy.

I had also been drying some oregano from my garden this year and got that put in a jar. The jar reads 1/3 oz, but that really lasts a pretty long time. I had basically decided not to do spices next year because we just couldn't eat them as fast as we needed to. What I may do is harvest and dry all year long. Not sure. I have a months to decide.

Google Maps - Wireless

OK. I found this 2 days ago, and I'm afraid I'm just getting around to sharing... sorry.

I'm not sure if you have ever used Google Maps. Well, if you haven't it is great!

They have added another wonderful piece to their already wonderful puzzle.

It is Google Maps for Wireless Palm devices. It was specifically made for the Palm Treo, but it also works on my Palm TX. Only difference is I'd have to be at a hot spot to use it.

Anyway, it works on a boat load of devices.

Anyway, very cool!

Check it out.

WL - 11/3 check-in

15 weeks down.

Hard to believe it's been that long. I can really notice the changes. My face looks slimmer, shoot, I look slimmer.

For the most part, I did pretty good getting through Halloween with all the candy around and not eating too much of it.

I've lost another 1/2 inch in my stomach, so that's good.
I've also lost another 1/2 pound. That takes me to 31 pounds lost.

Good riddance! And if you are out there reading this and you say you found them, you can keep them.

First Freeze

We had our first freeze this morning, at least at my house.

26.3 degrees if I remember correctly. It felt nice. I really love this time of year.
